RevitalizationGeorgia Forestry Commission Project Report
The purpose of the project is to educate property owners in the SouthStar CDC service area about the value of trees and the role residents can play in preserving urban forests. The other goal of the project is to develop capacity in the SouthStar CDC to influence growth and development in zip code 30316 such that community forests and other natural features such as creeks and streams are preserved.
The project is designed to address specific issues as outlined in the Georgia Forestry Commissions five year plan. The SouthStar CDC project addresses:
Issue 1: Tree loss in Georgia-The project will inventory existing tree cover, promote tree planting, and support the retention of existing trees by educating property owners about proper tree maintenance and care.
Issue 2: Understanding the Resource Value of Trees-The project will educate property owners about the value of trees through presentations, brochures, and community projects.
Issue 3: Tree Maintenance Best Management Practices-The project will provide information to property owners regarding proper tree maintenance and care and will demonstrate proper techniques through community planting projects
The objectives of the project are as follows:
- 1. Create public awareness among property owners in the SouthStar CDC service area about the value of trees in maintaining a healthy and sustainable community and environment
- 2. Increase awareness and access to sources of professional urban forestry and arboricultural expertise
- 3. Educate property owners about appropriate tree maintenance and care to preserve existing tree cover and reduce tree loss.
