Community Building

Our latest community building effort is the Community & Unity Project, where community needs are identified and addressed.

Community & Unity Project

We have held two workdays to transform an ugly abandoned street into a neighborhood mini-park. This property is an alley/abandoned street that runs east from between 756 & 766 Maynard Terrace over to the Cecile/Jobeth Ave. loop. It was littered, overgrown and generally an unsafe eyesore.

We had a great workday on May 7.  We cut down all the underbrush to make it more open & visible from the road. Huge piles of trash gathered at each end of the property. We segregated three large bags of recyclable glass, plastic and metal.

A neighborhood volunteer arranged for the following week to have her nephew bring out his "bobcat" earth mover to remove a large pile of roofing shingles that had been dumped on the property.

On our May 28 workday, we planted some day lillies and collected two large bags of trash, but most of it was old debris uncovered by the bobcat - very little of it had been dropped there over the past three weeks!

While we still need to plant more low-lying perennials and install the two benches that have been donated to the project.

Workdays will continue approximatley one per month untill the area becomes basically self-sustaining.
