SouthStar CDC Recognized for Pedestrian Advocacy

SouthStar CDC was among eleven recipients of PEDS Atlanta's Golden Shoe Awards.
In a region dominated by cars, eleven Golden Shoe Award winners are raising the bar and meeting the needs of people on foot. On October 25, PEDS – the region’s leading advocate for pedestrian safety - hosted its 8th annual Golden Shoe Awards Celebration to honor people, projects and places that have contributed significantly toward making metro Atlanta friendlier to pedestrians. East Atlanta resident and SouthStar Community Development Corporation board member Ken Rose was among the honorees at the event, held at SCAD - Atlanta's midtown campus. SouthStar CDC was selected for successfully lobbying the City of Atlanta, the Atlanta Regional Commission and the Georgia Department of Transportation for positive change in southeast Atlanta's Moreland Avenue corridor. SouthStar CDC won a competitive Livable Centers Initiative (LCI) grant for South Moreland Avenue and convinced the Georgia Department of Transportation to restore crosswalks on Glenwood Avenue and make pedestrian safety improvements on Moreland Avenue where it intersects with I-20. Pedestrian crossing signals have been upgraded at the Moreland and Glenwood Avenue intersection at the behest of SouthStar CDC. Rose, an avid cyclist and walker, said "As southeast Atlanta and the Moreland Avenue corridor continue to develop, we have an opportunity to guide this growth for a safer and healthier community for everyone." Continuing improvements are being made on the I-20 bridge of Moreland Avenue, with work now being done on the western side of the street. Citizens are encouraged to become involved with the South Moreland Avenue LCI study, with details and meeting dates at http://southstarcdc.org.
