Background

On July 16, 1998, after many years of planning and discussion by three area organizations, South Atlantans for Neighborhood Development (SAND), East Atlanta Community Association (EACA), and East Atlanta Business Association (EABA), SouthStar Community Development Corporation was incorporated. In February 2000, we received our 501(c)(3) organizational status from the IRS, enabling the organization to receive tax exempt funds. SouthStar CDC continues to represent its founding business and residential communities, SAND, EACA, and EABA, and has also added the Eastland Skyhaven Community Association (ESCA) to the list founding organizations.

SouthStar CDC's mission allows it to be involved in a wide range of community projects including land use planning, commercial development, and other community development efforts rather than only on residential housing, the traditional focus of CDCs.

The 2001-2002 Report to the Community

In Memoriam

Rev. Dolly Mahone and Mr. Dale C. Warren had both been friends of SouthStar Community Development Corporation and both had served on SouthStar CDC’s Board of Directors. SouthStar and the greater community will miss their involvement and voices for years to come.

Mr. Dale C. Warren
Those who didn’t know Dale Warren had most likely heard the name. His name floated throughout the southeast Atlanta neighborhoods surrounding Ormewood Park as that of only one of our most involved resident’s could. A long-term Ormewood Park resident, Dale had been active in the community for many, many years, often inspiring others to become involved by his energy and enthusiasm.
When Dale Warren passed away on January 12, 2002, the residents of our area lost a tireless advocate and devoted worker. Among his many roles in serving the community, Dale had been chairman of Atlanta’s Zoning Review Board. He was also a Charter Member graduate of the APAB Leadership Institute of Atlanta.

Rev. Dolly Mahone
Rev. Dolly Mahone, a powerful force in the East Atlanta community, passed November 28, 2002. Dolly was a different kind of mover and shaker. That smile was sometimes misleading because her style was a stand right up and say it style, often with prickly edges. She believed in telling the truth, “not beating around the bush.” She was always looking out for the good of the community, not impressed with “talkers” who had no action.
Dolly Mahone represented the East Atlanta Community Association on the Board. However, her SouthStar CDC participation was only the tip of the iceberg of her community activism. Her service over many years included PTA president at Burgess Elementary, president of the East Atlanta Community Association and chair of the NPU-W. In 2002, the East Lake Family YMCA recognized her as Volunteer of the Year. She was completing a second term as chair of NPU-W at the time of her passing.
